Bericht:

Ich kann die Namen der Strände noch nicht mal aussprechen, an denen ich heute war, aber schreiben geht: Gwithian und Godrevy! Nach einer kurzen Recherche habe ich mich dazu entschieden die Strecke mit dem Rad zu fahren. Mit dem Bus wäre auch gegangen, aber mit Umsteigen wäre ich fast noch länger unterwegs gewesen. Die Strecke ist sehr eben, nur ein paar kleinere Steigungen. Meine App markiert die Strecke als einfach, obwohl es fast hin und zurück 50 km sind. Ich habe zwar überhaupt keine Kondition und Übung (bin dieses Jahr noch nicht einmal Rad gefahren), aber das wird schon… Das Schöne: Es geht hauptsächlich über Nebenstraßen, die eigentlich nur zu den Stoßzeiten stärker befahren sind. Man fährt an kleinen Häusern und Bächen vorbei und vor allem überall an einem satten Grün.

Godrevy is at the far north-eastern end of three miles of golden sand stretching from Hayle. Owned by the National Trust, it takes the brunt of the Atlantic swell and is one of the more exposed beaches of the North coast. From buckets and spades on sunny summer days to classic rugged Cornish splendour on a stormy winter’s day, Godrevy offers the ultimate outdoor experience.

The sandy beach at Godrevy is connected to Gwithian beach at lower tides to create an impressive stretch of sand. Remember to check the time of high water. as hundreds of metres of sand all but disappear at high tide so don’t get caught out. The beach terminates with a low rocky headland and the famous Godrevy lighthouse (of Virginia Woolfe’s To The Lighthouse fame) on an island just off the coast. Godrevy Cafe, hidden amongst the dunes, provides drinks and snacks.

Given the right conditions the waves can be epic – long walling lefts and rights. It is also capable of holding a fair sized swell, up 8ft. However this doesn’t mean you’ll have an easy paddle out! The break is at it’s best on a low tide where it can produce a fast hollow wave. It does work through the tide but becomes increasingly slopey and bouncy.
Godrevey is quite well known for it’s clean up sets that seem to come from nowhere and catch everybody out. The peak also moves around a fair bit which works both ways – you can spend all day chasing it around or alternatively sit and wait for the wave of the day to come and find you. For some reason the beach attracts weird forms of surf craft such as goat boats!
Godrevy is owned and looked after by the National Trust and is able to care and conserve areas like this, thanks to their members, volunteers and donors. Car park free to National Trust members.

Lifeguard cover from the 19th of May until the 30th of September (2019). Please note: Dogs are welcome on this beach except between 1 May and 30 September (08:00am – 07:00pm) when a seasonal dog ban is in place between Red River and lighthouse (2019).

Man merkt die vielen Kilometer gar nicht! Auf dem Hinweg bin ich bis an das Ende der Straße gefahren, ab hier ging es nur noch zu Fuß weiter. Vorbei an steilen Klippen, ohne Sicherung und zur Linken das Meer und der Leuchtturm. Das Meer rauscht gegen die Klippen und verursacht das einzige Geräusch. Es ist hier erstaunlich leer, die paar Touristen, die da sind, verteilen sich gut. Manche lassen sich hier zur Pause nieder, aber ich habe noch etwas vor mir, ich möchte an den Gwithian Towans Beach.

Also ging es wieder zurück zu meinem Fahrrad und den Weg wieder zurück. Dummerweise bin ich zu weit gefahren, denn ich hätte eigentlich gleich den nächsten Parkplatz wieder anfahren müssen. Der Strand ist ewig lang, aber es gibt nur einen Zugang auf dieser Seite und der ist hinter dem Parkplatz.

Somit musste ich den Weg dann wieder in den Dünnen oberhalb der Klippen zurück laufen. Aber das war nicht schlimm, denn ich wurde mit dem schönsten Strand belohnt, den ich je gesehen habe (Neuseeland ausgenommen).

Hier wird gesurft und mit den Hunden getollt. Das finde ich an England so entspannt, es gibt nur wenige Strände, an denen Hunde verboten sind und jeder sammelt den „Kram“ seines Hundes ein.

Aber zurück zum Strand, durch die hohen Klippen gibt es hier sogar Schattenplätze und so muss man – trotz Sonnenbrand – nicht auf den Strand verzichten! Der Strand verläuft so weit Richtung Süden, dass man das Ende kaum sehen kann. Bei Ebbe muss man sehr weit laufen bis man endlich am Wasser ist, das nur langsam tiefer wird. Beim richtigen Wind ist es ein Surfer-Paradies. Gegenüber kann man noch die Bucht von St Ives in der Ferne erkennen.

Blasted by the breeze off the Atlantic, the magnificent beach at Gwithian Towans is always a colourful scene of windsurfers on the water blokarts on the beach and kites in the sky. Backed by sand dunes tufted with wild grass, at low tide there is a vast amount of sand to enjoy and large areas of rock pools and caves are uncovered which are great for kids to explore.

The beach is a favourite destination for surfers as the constant swell coming in from the ocean provides good all year round conditions. Common seals are a regular sight near the beach and the area is a breeding ground for colonies of seabirds such as guillemots, razorbills and cormorants. The Sunset Surf beachside café and bar overlooks the beach and is open all year, serving locally sourced, seasonal ingredients wherever possible and nearby the Jam Pot Café and Shop, a former 19th century coastguard lookout, is where you can enjoy home cooked snacks and be distracted by the stunningly natural views out over St Ives Bay.
Access to the beach is along a path through the sand dunes from the car park. Large areas of rock pools, which are great for kids to explore, some caves too.

Gwithian provides consistent, quality waves suitable for all surfing abilities. It conveniently gets gradually bigger the further towards Godrevy you go – so you can find a wave to suit your ability. On a good day expect long walling lefts and rights with the possiblility of a few barrels thrown in at low tide. Optimum conditions are medium sized north coast swell and southerly round to easterly winds (south east is directly offshore). Sand chairs are available from Riviere Sands Holiday Park. Please note: Dogs are welcome on this beach except between 1 May and 30 September (08:00am – 07:00pm) when a seasonal dog ban is in place between Ceres Rock and Red River. This boundary has been adjusted following the collapse of the steps at St Peters Point which left the area where dogs were allowed inaccessible.
