Geopark von Agios Nikolaos

Heute habe ich den Geopark of Agios Nikolaos besucht. Versteinerte Bäume wollte ich immer schon sehen und da es nur 66 km von meinem Ort entfernt war, entschied ich mich für eine Tour. Nicht weit davon entfernt habe ich mir einen Stellplatz für die Nacht gesucht, denn im Geopark selbst darf man nicht campen, das wird wohl auch kontrolliert. Somit hatte ich am Morgen „nur“ noch eine halbe Stunde zu fahren. 30 Minuten, die es in sich hatten. Berg- und Talfahrten bin ich aus Griechenland mittlerweile gewöhnt und es ist Alltag. Diesen engen Straßen in den Dörfern rauben mir jedoch weiterhin jeden Nerv. So auch heute wieder geschehen. Eine 2,20 Meter breite Straße, an den Seiten Häuser oder abfallende Hänge, sehr enge Kurven um die kleinen Dorfkneipen. Und genau so einer Kurve näherte ich mich, als plötzlich ein 7,5 Tonner um die Ecke kommt. Allerdings im Schritttempo, weil in der Kurve noch Autos parkten. Tja da standen wir nun, er zuckte mit den Schultern, ich zuckte mit den Schultern. Zurückfahren waren weder für ihn noch für mich eine Option. Dann entdeckte ich eine sehr steil abfallende Einfahrt auf der rechten Seite. Gewagt, aber die einzige Option. Ich also dort rein, zum Glück nur ein Stück, weil es für ihn schon ausreichte, um vorbei zu kommen. Ich warte wirklich nur auf den Moment, an dem gar nichts mehr geht. Es ist schon ein Wunder, dass so etwas noch nicht passiert ist. Nachdem ich dieses Hindernis hinter mich gebracht hatte, musste ich noch 4 km auf Schotterstraßen überwinden. Mein Camper hat geächzt und gestöhnt. Überall hat es gerumpelt und gescheppert.

The petrified palm forest of the coastal zone of Agios Nikolaos is included to the Atlas of Geological Monuments of the Aegean and claims strongly a place in the Network of Geoparks in Europe.

In coastal sites Agia Marina, Korakas and Spitha, the petrified witnesses of a distant past hold the secrets and codes of their era . According to a study by Professor Evangelos Velitzelos, Director of Historical Geology – Paleontology of the University of Athens in fossiliferous positions of Agios Nikolaos the findings are unique in Europe and invaluable scientific importance.

Geological disturbances, earthquakes and volcanic activity led to the fossilization of the paleoflora of the region, millions of years before our era. The organic matter of trees, plants and mollusks, have been replaced molecule by molecule from solution of silicon and calcium in a patient process that took place under the sea.

Root nodes reaching 1m in diameter and numerous fossilized creatures have been preserved in a large area of the coast of Agios Nikolaos and is a priceless geological museum that wins its place among the monuments of nature.

In order to visit it head from Agios Nikolaos to the picturesque small fishing harbor of Profitis Elias. Shortly before there is a sign that says to Agia Marina and Petrified Forest. Follow the dirt road for 3.3 km to reach the monument. Intermediates you will find an information stand for the geological park, just before you reach the church of Agia Marina.

Dann war ich da und es hat sich gelohnt! So etwas habe ich bisher nicht gesehen. Die versteinerten Bäume gerieten fast ins Hintertreffen. Jeder Zentimeter Boden war von eingeschlossenen Muscheln und anderem Getier gespickt. Man lief einfach darüber hinweg. Es waren wirklich unzählige Muscheln. Dann waren in den Steinen plötzlich Löcher und man hörte das Wasser aus dem Untergrund gluckern. Unwillkürlich musste ich an Hades und die Unterwelt denken!

Geologische Ereignisse, Erdbeben und vulkanische Aktivität hat die Landschaft so geschaffen wie sie ist und das vor Millionen von Jahren. Wenn man sich durch das Gebiet bewegt hat man das Gefühl Unterwasser zu sein. Die Steine wurden vom Wasser geformt und wirken wie rausgerissen. Um das wirklich nachempfinden zu können, muss man es sich Vorort anschauen! Trotz einer grauenvollen Anfahrt, kann ich es nur empfehlen!
